Dr. Murthi is an Attending Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon and Fellowship Director in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He is also Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and since July 2025 he has served as Chief Medical Advisor to Zimmer Biomet's Division of Shoulder, Sports, Extremities and Trauma.
Dr. Murthi earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Case Western Reserve University, completed his residency at George Washington University Medical Center and trained in the Charles S. Neer Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He later completed the Surgical Leadership Program at Harvard Medical School, and he is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Murthi has authored more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, and he has designed numerous orthopaedic implants used in shoulder and elbow surgery today. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Current Orthopaedic Practice and as a reviewer for many of the leading journals in our field, including the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. Murthi has also been a tireless leader within our professional community. He founded and is past President of the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons. Within the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, he founded the ASES Mentor Mentee Program, chaired the Education Committee, served on the ASES Foundation's Board of Trustees, and today co-chairs the Opportunity and Impact Committee and chairs the Neviaser Award Committee. He has held numerous leadership roles with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well, and he co-chairs the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society's Annual Meeting.
As Fellowship Director Dr. Murthi has trained generations of shoulder and elbow surgeons, and he continues to mentor residents and fellows in both clinical practice and research. He has also given his time abroad, participating in surgical mission trips with One World Surgery.
